Individuals without dental benefits are subject to expensive fees for certain treatments. These costs are magnified when they involve a family. With dental insurance, you have better access to the preventative care you need to keep your teeth healthy and beautiful. Regular visits to the dentist are critical to your oral health. Oral health issues, such as cavities and gum disease, can lead to more serious health issues, such as diabetes, respiratory problems and many others.
Oral health is important in all stages of life. Children, adults and seniors require proper dental care and should visit the dentist regularly. While it is recommended that we visit the dentist twice per year, many Canadians do not go as frequently as they should, often because they do not have adequate dental insurance.
What is Dental Insurance?
With a dental insurance policy, you have better access to the preventative care you need to keep your teeth healthy and beautiful. The better you take care of your teeth, the lower your overall costs for dental care will be.
How Does Canadian Dental Insurance Work?
In general, an individual dental insurance plan in Canada pays for a percentage of the costs associated with the services covered under the plan. Many citizens receive dental coverage through their employer, otherwise, Canadians pay directly for their oral care. While employers cover some of the costs, the patient must pay the difference.
Canada Dental Benefit
The interim Canada Dental Benefit (CDB) is intended to help lower dental costs for eligible families earning less than $90,000 per year. Depending on your adjusted family net income, a tax-free payment of $260, $390, or $650 is available for each eligible child. You can apply for a maximum of 2 payments per child. Applications are open until June 30, 2024 for:
- dental care received between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024
- one additional payment if you meet the criteria
Canadian Dental Care Plan
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) will help ease financial barriers to accessing oral health care for eligible Canadian residents with an annual adjusted family net income of less than $90,000 who do not have access to dental insurance.
If you’re a parent or guardian of a child under 12 and do not have access to dental insurance, you may already be eligible for the Canada Dental Benefit. This benefit is available until June 30, 2024.
Is it Worth to Buy Dental Insurance in Canada?
Dental insurance can help defray many of the out-of-pocket costs associated with routine and emergency dental care, so you can get the care you need when you need it without breaking the bank. Not all Canadians have access to government-subsidized dental coverage, so it may be beneficial for certain individuals to take out dental insurance depending on your needs.
