What is the NASDAQ?

The NASDAQ (National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations) is a stock exchange based in the United States. It is known for being the first electronic stock market and one of the largest stock exchanges in the world. The NASDAQ was founded in 1971 and is headquartered in New York City. It is known for listing many technology-based companies and is often referred to as the “tech-heavy” stock exchange. Unlike the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange), the NASDAQ operates on a market maker system, which means that trades are facilitated by market makers who act as intermediaries between buyers and sellers. The NASDAQ Composite is a market capitalization-weighted index that tracks the performance of all NASDAQ-listed stocks. It is one of the most widely followed stock market indices and is often used as a barometer for the health of the tech sector.
